Sports and Outdoor Learning
Physical Opportunties Across Our Federation
Physical Education is a vital part of life across all our Federation schools. We are committed to providing a broad, inclusive and engaging PE curriculum that supports the physical, emotional and social development of every child. Across our four unique rural sites, we offer a wide range of opportunities for children to be active, healthy and confident. From traditional sports to outdoor adventurous activities, we ensure that every child experiences the joy and challenge of physical activity, regardless of ability or interest.
Curriculum and Skills Development
Our PE curriculum enables children to take part in a wide variety of activities including:
- Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Cricket, Rounders, Football, Rugby, Netball, Tennis, Hockey
- We aim for all children to develop a wide range of physical skills across these disciplines, building confidence, coordination, teamwork and resilience.
Outdoor and Adventurous Activities (OAA)
We use our rural locations to promote Outdoor and Adventurous Activities, helping children develop problem-solving, cooperation and independence. Forest School plays a key role in this, encouraging children to be active in different ways and engaging those who may not enjoy traditional competitive sports. In KS2, we build on this by using Forest School to further develop OAA experiences.
Swimming and Water Safety
Living in rural areas near rivers, we have prioritised swimming in our curriculum. Our aim is to ensure that all children leave us in Year 6 as confident and strong swimmers, equipped with essential water safety skills.
Competitive Sports and Events
We take part in area sports competitions every half term, and we are proud of our school teams. We aim for every child to represent their school at some point during their time with us, helping them learn about fair play, sportsmanship, and how to handle both success and defeat.
We also participate in cluster sports events such as football and cricket, and have joined the Keighley Cross Country League, giving children further opportunities to compete and collaborate with peers from other schools.
Community Links and Specialist Coaching
We value our strong relationships with local sports clubs, including:
- Wharfedale Rugby Club
- Grassington Juniors Football Club
- Upper Wharfedale Cricket Club
The Impact of PE
PE promotes opportunities for children to be creative, cooperative and competitive, facing challenges both individually and in groups. It teaches valuable lessons in self-discipline, personal responsibility, and emotional regulation. We know that a “good workout” helps ease stress, tension and anxiety, resulting in better attention and engagement in class.
Our Commitment
Our Federation is always looking for new and exciting ways to engage children in physical activity. We are proud of our pupils’ sporting achievements and are committed to helping every child fulfil their full potential while enjoying the fun and challenge that PE brings.
